How to Become a Commercial Pilot
Becoming a commercial pilot is a clear path: licenses, flight hours, and a medical certificate. This guide covers the requirements, the training process, and how pilots usually get their first job. Alpha Aviation Group trains international students for FAA licenses in Miami, Florida.
What do you need to be a commercial pilot?
If you train under FAA Part 61 for airplane, the ages that matter are on the certificate, not on the first dual lesson:
- Private: 17 years (§ 61.103). Commercial: 18 years (§ 61.123). Dual instruction can start earlier.
- English is the working language of aviation. A high-school diploma is not a sentence we can quote from Part 61; Alpha may still ask for documents for its own file.
- Medical class follows the privileges you will exercise (§ 61.23). First class is not an entry ticket.
- You earn a private certificate first, then the experience toward commercial.

How long does training take, and what does it cost?
Ask admissions for a current plan. We will not publish a month count or a dollar range here.
- Ground school covers aerodynamics, weather, navigation, and the rules you will be tested on.
- Aeronautical experience for a commercial airplane certificate sits in § 61.129. Night and instrument work are part of that list, not a blog total.
- Sequence: private, then commercial. Airline transport is a later certificate.
- Cost follows hours flown, the aircraft, and how you train. Get a dated quote.

What jobs can you get after a CPL?
After the CPL, most pilots build hours before a major airline:
- Regional airline first officer
- Charter or corporate flying
- Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), if that rating is on your plan
- Cargo or specialized work (survey, air ambulance)
