Crossing the Atlantic on Cooking Oil: The Milestone of the 100% Sustainable Flight

Aviation has a decarbonization problem. Hydrogen airliners and battery airliners are still later stories. SAF — sustainable aviation fuel designed as a drop-in for existing turbines — is the near-term one.

Virgin Atlantic’s Flight100 was a demonstration: a Boeing 787 flew London to New York on 100% SAF. Passenger jets have crossed that ocean for decades. The milestone was the fuel, not “the first commercial transatlantic flight.”

What the demonstration showed

The useful claim is the airframe and engines: a 787 with standard Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. That is the drop-in point. We will not publish blend percentages (waste oil versus synthetic aromatic kerosene) without a source on this page.

How much of a tank can be SAF on a given airline flight is an operator and regulator question, not a number we will invent.

Why this page will not quote market shares

Supply and price are why SAF is not every departure. We will not repeat unsourced figures — 70% emissions, 0.1% of global fuel, or a 3–5× cost multiple. If you want those, read a named report.

Flight100 showed a fuel in an existing airplane. It did not invent transatlantic service and it did not finish the market.

More industry context without a training pitch stuffed in: electric air taxis. If you want to fly, the pilot program is the syllabus page.

Frequently asked questions

Was Flight100 the first commercial flight across the Atlantic?

No. Passenger jets have crossed that ocean for decades. Flight100 was a demonstration flight using 100% sustainable aviation fuel on a Boeing 787. It showed a fuel blend in an existing airframe. It did not invent transatlantic airline service.

Can today’s airliners burn SAF without new engines?

SAF is designed as a drop-in fuel for existing turbine engines when it meets the applicable specification. How much of a tank can be SAF on a given flight is an operator and regulator question. We are not publishing blend percentages here without a source on the page.

Why isn’t every flight on SAF already?

Supply and price, mainly. We will not quote unsourced shares of global fuel or “three-to-five-times” cost multiples. If you want the current industry picture, read a named report. This note is a correction of the milestone, not a market study.
