Space Pilots: The New Career That Isn't NASA
For 60 years, if you wanted to fly to space, the path was extremely narrow: you had to be an elite military test pilot, have a PhD in engineering, and pass NASA selection (where thousands apply and only 10 are chosen).
That has changed forever. We are witnessing the birth of space tourism and, with it, the need for commercial pilots to take civilians to the stars.
Beyond the atmosphere: Suborbital vs. Orbital?
Companies like Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin are leading the suborbital market. Virgin, for example, uses a unique system: a mothership (“Eve”) carries the rocket plane (“VSS Unity”) to high altitude before releasing it.
Unlike fully automated capsules, these vehicles require two human pilots at the controls. The job is a fascinating mix of extreme skills:
- Test Pilot Precision: They must handle the craft during a vertical rocket-powered ascent at Mach 3 speeds (three times the speed of sound) and manage an unpowered atmospheric entry, gliding back to the runway.
- Physical Tolerance: Pilots must withstand high G-forces (gravitational forces) during launch and reentry, requiring training in human centrifuges.
The Future: “Earth-to-Earth” Travel?
But the ultimate goal isn’t just 10 minutes of zero-gravity tourism. The vision of companies like SpaceX (with its Starship) is to use space for terrestrial transport.
Imagine flying from New York to Shanghai in 39 minutes, exiting the atmosphere and re-entering. This concept will require a global fleet of pilots and space systems operators, creating thousands of jobs that do not exist today.
Commercial “Astronaut Wings”?
The FAA’s Commercial Space Transportation Astronaut Wings program ran and then closed. It is not a badge the agency is awarding in the present tense. If a future recognition exists, it will be on an official FAA page — not inferred here.
A PPL in Miami, Florida, with flying at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE), is still an airplane certificate. It is not a spaceship type rating and not a LinkedIn title you can enroll toward.
